South East Conference

[posted on Fri 3rd Jul 2009 by Warren]  » Comments (0)

In 2007/08 six teams joined together to attempt to start the first South East Conference with only limited success but in 2008/09 the South East Conference is back and looking to be a really great Cup!

The Medway Madness are joined by the Army Air Corps Ice Hawks, Guildford Smoke, Bracknell Blizzard and Slough Scorpions to make up the five team Cup group. A number of games have already been played and the Cup will come to a climas in Summer 2009 with the completion of all fixtures.

Madness progress can be seen on the attached link.
http://www.bracknellblizzards.co.uk/southconf.htm

So far the Madness have completed three fixtures losing 15-5 to Guildford, 7-4 to Bracknell and chalking up the first W in the column in a 4-2 win over Slough. With the away games nearly done it all comes down to the home performance to move the Madness up the standings.

A special thanks should go to Steve Merry and Chris Orritt of the Blizzard for organising this years Cup and maintaining the website.

Medway Madness to play at the annual Rec Tournament at Ice Sheffield!

[posted on Thu 2nd Jul 2009 by Warren]  » Comments (0)

For the second occasion Medway Madness are looking forward to lining up against some of the best hockey teams in the country as part of the annual Rec Tournament held at the Ice Sheffield arena.

Whilst the Madness stand little chance of winning it, the team look to use this tournament as a benchmark about how players are improving as well as using the opportunity to play against better teams to improve our own game going into the Summer deluge of matches.

This year will see the Madness playing against Solent Scorpions, Eastern Star, Kingston Cobras and Solihull Wolves as part of Group A. Fellow Gillingham based team and last years champions, Invicta Knights, will compete against Bristol Warriors, Peterborough Eagles, Chelmsford Chargers and Cleveland Comets in Group B.

The final five teams in Group C are Whitley Bay Islands, Grimsby Lightning, Cardiff Bay Lightning, Blackburn Falcons and Solihull Vikings.

2008-2009 Medway Madness 5th Anniversary Season

[posted on Tue 30th Jun 2009 by Warren]  » Comments (2)

This season represents the 5th anniversary since the start of the Madness. Back in 2004 a group of friends who were utilising the Sunday night ice time for training decided to formalise themselves into an EIHA registered side, and the Madness was born.

The team has always been aimed at the beginner to intermediate skill level looking to play challenge games each year and improve all players. Over the years the side has obtained sponsorship to provide kit and training shirts, participated in the annual Sheffield Rec Tournament and in 2007/08 started the inaugural South East Rec Cup with four other local sides.

Pleasingly throughout the five years new players, completely new to the game, have started skating and progressed to a point whereby they are now moving on. Several players who have pulled on the Madness jersey are now playing either for more skilled rec teams (like last year's champions, Invicta Knights) upto English National League 2 (Lee Valley Lions, Chelmsford Warriors, Invicta Mustangs) and English National League 1 (Streatham Redskins) level. Whilst the Madness may not have taken them the whole way we are very proud that at some point they wore our colours.

To celebrate the 5th anniversary sponsorship has provided for a special new alternate strip, seen below in this season's team photo.

Game Tonight Cancelled - Sunday 3rd May

A reminder that tonights home game against Royal Logistics Corps Chiefs has been canceled.  This as a mark of respect of the untimely death of Andy Martin last Monday.  Andy was a former Medway Bears / Invicta Dynamos player and having retired a couple of years ago was the coach of the Invicta under 16's.  He was a good friend of several Madness players and will be missed by us all.

There will also be no training tonight.

Madness Rumble Milton Keynes in 2nd Summer game!

[posted on Sun 20th Jul 2008 by Warren]  » Comments (0)

The Madness took a 8-2 win over MK Rumble on Friday 18th July in Gillingham. After a disappointing start to 2008 with improving results this was the teams first win in 2008 with a hope that there will be a run of good form to see out the season.

The goals came from Loyde Fuller (4+1), Tony Wood (2+2), Janne Metsapelto (1+1) and Marvin MacKenzie (1+0). Loyde is currently trying out for the Invicta Mustangs (ENL South Div 2) so this could have been one of his last performances in a Madness jersey. The team would like to wish him all the best with his trials.

The next game is at home to the Army Air Corps Ice Hawks on Sunday 27th July.

Madness open Summer Home campaign with a draw

[posted on Mon 14th Jul 2008 by Warren]  » Comments (0)

The Medway Madness have played 20 games (and the Sheffield tournament) already this season with 17 of these being on the road but with the end of the Dynamos & Knights season the Madness get a chance to take advantage of the home ice.

The first game of the Summer was against Guildford Smoke who beat the Madness 10-3 back in the Spectrum earlier in the year. With a new motivation following good outings against the Knights and at the tournament the Madness played hard and despite falling behind on occasions managed to battle back to earn a draw 6-6.

The next game at home will be this Friday (18th July) against Milton Keynes Rumble at 11:45pm.

Madness proud of debut in Sheffield

[posted on Tue 8th Jul 2008 by Warren]  » Comments (3)

The Medway Madness took part in the Annual Rec Championships in Ice Sheffield on 5th & 6th July with some great performances being put in by the team. This was the first time the Madness have participated in the tournament and have come away with some excellent memories of a top weekend - both on and off the ice.

With a relatively inexperienced team the Madness were out to show what they can do and how they have improved, and were not disappointed with the results.

On the Saturday the team were drawn against tough opposition, including last years winners the Grimsby Lightning, and despite good results could not take any points from the day. The results were:

Loss 1-0 to Sheffield Blazers
Loss 1-0 to Oxford Bulls
Loss 2-0 to Grimsby Lightning
Loss 3-1 to Solent Scorpions

The Solent Scorpions and Grimsby Lightning both progressed to the top group on the Sunday, Sheffield were to compete in the Plate with Oxford and Medway both being placed in the third group, the Cup.

Sunday was a lot more competitive for the Madness and after making a weary, lacklustre start against the Norwich North Stars pulled out some great results.

Loss 2-0 to Norwich North Stars
Draw 1-1 with Oxford Bulls
Win 2-0 over Peterborough Phoenix
Draw 0-0 with Solihull Wolves

A very good debut in the tournament and something to build on in 2009.

Photographs of the tournament will be posted throughout the coming week. Copies of all photos can be purchased on a DVD.

Sheffield Tournament Groupings

At the Sheffield Recreational Championships, to be held July 5th & 6th, the groupings have been announced for the Saturday. The Madness will line up against Sheffield Blazers, Oxford Bulls, Solent Scorpions and Grimsby Lightning.

Fellow Gillingham side, the Invicta Knights, are drawn against Peterborough Phoenix, Bristol Warriors, Solihull Vikings and Cleveland Comets.

Times for Madness games on the Saturday are 11am, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm.

All 15 sides will then be sorted by points and split into three new groups for the Sunday - Championship, Plate and Consolation Cup.

Spaces still exist on the Madness roster for the event so speak to either Warren or Dave for information. Rosters must be confirmed to the EIHA before 20th June.

Good Luck to Barry Stubbs!

Barry Stubbs, a founding member of the Madness, has moved to Warwick recently to take up a new job. The Madness would like to wish Barry, Sandra & Callum all the best in their new home.

Barry, man of the match in yesterday's Solihull game, has been involved with hockey in Gillingham for many years and Dynamos fans will instantly recognise his voice as he was the DJ at the Ice Bowl for a number of years on game day.

Hopefully we haven't seen the last of Barry and he will be rejoining the Madness for a few of our road trips in the remainder of the 2007-2008 season.
